Sun Feb 02 05:30:00 UTC 2025: **Durant and Payton Engage in Good-Natured Trash Talk During Suns Victory**
SAN FRANCISCO – Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant and Hall of Famer Gary Payton Sr. engaged in a lively, albeit friendly, exchange of trash talk during Friday night’s Suns victory over the Golden State Warriors. The playful banter, which dominated much of the third quarter, saw Durant repeatedly assert his dominance over the former defensive stalwart.
Durant, who scored 19 points in the game, claimed he was highlighting the differences in playing styles between their eras, playfully suggesting that Payton wouldn’t have been able to guard him in his prime. “They tend to talk down on the mentality of our era’s players,” Durant said, explaining his motivation. He added that the trash talk began during their time together with Team USA.
Despite his confident boasts – including pointing out his preferred post position to score against Payton – Durant emphasized his respect for Payton, calling him “one of my favorite players.” He even admitted that he couldn’t get the last word in their spirited debate.
Payton, watching from courtside, confirmed the exchange was all in good fun. The playful rivalry, punctuated by Durant’s three-pointer spree in the third quarter, promises to continue in future encounters. “It’s always good rapport with the older generation,” Durant stated. “But there’s some players that still got that competitive edge… That’s GP, and I respect that about him.” The two plan to continue their good-natured verbal sparring for years to come.
