**New Delhi, February 2nd, 2025** – The Rashtriya Adivasi Samnvay Samiti (RASS) has announced a nationwide protest for the inclusion of a separate Sarna religion code in the upcoming Census. The Jharkhand-based organization, along with groups like the Kendriya Sarna Samiti, will hold a mass demonstration at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on February 28th.
This call to action follows decades of advocacy by Adivasi communities in Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, and West Bengal for a distinct religious classification. The 2011 Census saw nearly 4.9 lakh individuals identify as Sarna under the “Others” category, with over 80% residing in Jharkhand alone. This demonstrates the growing support for a dedicated Sarna code. The RASS is urging Scheduled Tribe associations across India to participate in the upcoming protest.
