Sat Feb 01 14:52:04 IST 2025: ## Three Hostages Released in Gaza as Israel-Hamas Ceasefire Holds
**Khan Younis, Gaza Strip –** In a significant development in the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict, three hostages – American-Israeli Keith Siegel, and French-Israelis Yarden Bibas and Ofer Kalderon – were released by Hamas on February 1st, 2025. The release marks a key step in the first phase of a fragile ceasefire agreement reached on January 19th. The hostages, captured during Hamas’ October 7th, 2023 attack, were handed over to the Red Cross in emotional scenes witnessed by thousands in both Gaza and Tel Aviv.
Mr. Siegel’s release was met with jubilation by his family, particularly his wife Aviva, who has been a vocal advocate for his freedom. The release of Mr. Bibas reignited concerns about the fate of his wife and two young children, who Hamas claims were killed in an Israeli airstrike. Mr. Kalderon’s family expressed immense relief at his return, after a 483-day ordeal. French President Emmanuel Macron also expressed his nation’s joy at Kalderon’s release.
This latest exchange is part of a broader deal involving the release of 33 Israeli hostages in exchange for approximately 2,000 Palestinian prisoners. Israel has acknowledged that Hamas claims eight of the Israeli hostages are dead. Furthermore, wounded Palestinians are being allowed to leave Gaza through the Rafah crossing, a key step in the ceasefire’s first phase which also includes the return of Palestinians to northern Gaza and an increase in humanitarian aid.
Despite the progress, the future of the ceasefire remains uncertain. Negotiations for a second phase, covering the release of the remaining hostages (around 80, with at least a third believed dead) and indefinite extension of the truce, are scheduled for next week. Failure to reach an agreement could lead to the resumption of hostilities by early March. Tensions remain high, with a key Israeli coalition partner already calling for the war’s resumption, while Hamas continues to demand an end to the conflict and a full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. The October 7th attack alone resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, with over 47,000 Palestinian casualties reported in the subsequent conflict.
