**Mumbai, February 2, 2025** – Tensions are simmering within Maharashtra’s ruling coalition, according to Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut. In his weekly column, Raut claims a significant rift between Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde is crippling the state’s governance.
Raut alleges that the relationship between Fadnavis and Shinde has deteriorated to the point of near-total communication breakdown, leaving the state administration paralyzed despite the coalition’s substantial majority in the Assembly. He asserts that Shinde, still reportedly bitter about not being reinstated as Chief Minister after the November 2024 elections, is actively trying to reclaim the position, a maneuver Fadnavis is fully aware of.
The MP further accuses the BJP of systematically undermining Shinde’s influence, particularly in his political stronghold of Thane, citing the appointment of BJP minister Ganesh Naik as guardian minister of neighboring Palghar as a key example. Raut claims Naik’s appointment is a deliberate attempt to challenge Shinde’s dominance. He also points to Shinde’s frequent absence or lateness from crucial meetings as evidence of his diminished role.
Raut alleges that Shinde feels betrayed by the BJP, citing a senior MLA’s claim that Union Home Minister Amit Shah promised Shinde the Chief Ministership after the 2024 elections, a promise allegedly broken. The MLA also reportedly stated that Shinde believes he is under surveillance by central agencies.
While a senior BJP minister recently dismissed the reports of tension, Raut counters that similar denials were made before the Shiv Sena split in June 2022. He also claims unease amongst MLAs in Shinde’s faction, with some reportedly considering switching allegiances.
In contrast to Shinde’s purported precarious position, Raut paints a picture of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar as politically secure, having forged a stronger working relationship with Fadnavis. Raut suggests Pawar’s alliance with the BJP was partly motivated by seeking to avoid potential legal action and recover attached assets.
Raut’s accusations paint a picture of a deeply fractured ruling coalition, raising concerns about the stability of the Maharashtra government. The BJP has yet to officially respond to these latest allegations.
