**New Delhi, [Date]** – The Prime Minister’s Research Fellowship (PMRF) scheme, a flagship initiative supporting doctoral research in India, will receive a significant expansion, according to Budget 2025 announcements. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revealed plans to award 10,000 new fellowships over the next five years.

Launched in 2018, the PMRF provides direct admission to PhD programs at prestigious institutions like IITs, IISc, and IISERs, along with substantial financial assistance. The scheme, highlighted recently by Prime Minister Narendra Modi as crucial to the success of initiatives like the Genome India Project, offers a monthly stipend ranging from ₹70,000 to ₹80,000, increasing annually, and a research grant of up to ₹10 lakh over five years.

Recent reforms have broadened eligibility, encompassing students from all recognized Indian universities and institutions. MTech students from AICTE-approved and centrally funded technical institutions (CFTIs) also benefit, receiving a ₹12,400 monthly stipend.
