**GAZA CITY** – For the first time in nearly nine months, the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt has reopened, offering a lifeline to dozens of sick and wounded Palestinians needing medical treatment in Egypt. Fifty patients, including children, were among the first to cross on Saturday, according to the Gaza Health Ministry. Images broadcast on Egyptian television showed Palestinian Red Crescent ambulances transferring patients to Egyptian ambulances at the crossing.
The reopening marks a significant development following the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. Israel’s agreement to reopen Rafah followed the release of the last remaining female Israeli captives held in Gaza by Hamas. This crucial step is seen as a key element in solidifying the fragile truce.
