**Prayagraj, India** – The Mahakumbh, the world’s largest Hindu religious gathering, is underway in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, attracting millions of devotees and generating a significant economic ripple effect, although concerns about infrastructure and pricing persist.

The 45-day festival, held every 12 years at four sacred locations in India, is expected to draw over 400 million visitors. This has created a windfall for some local businesses. Stationery vendor Arvind Agrawal reports a massive surge in sales of Kumbh-themed merchandise, while disposable goods seller Ashish Mittal anticipates a significant increase in revenue due to the high demand from community kitchens. Even advertising companies like Vritti iMedia are experiencing a boom, with their moving advertisement vans garnering significantly increased viewership.

The Uttar Pradesh government has invested ₹70 billion ($808.5 million) in infrastructure improvements, including water and waste management and transportation, with additional funding from the federal government. State officials claim the event will generate over $2 trillion in revenue for the country, based on an estimated ₹5,000 ($58) spent per attendee. However, this figure is disputed by economists who point to the predominantly lower-income demographics of many attendees and the substantial government expenditure on accommodation, safety, and food.

While some businesses thrive, many devotees report challenges. Complaints include inadequate shelter, unsanitary toilets, and inflated airfare prices, with tickets several times higher than usual. One devotee, Sunita Roy, described sleeping outdoors due to a lack of adequate accommodation, while software engineer Sayantan Mukherjee highlighted the poor state of temporary toilets as a major concern. The high cost of air travel also proved a barrier for many, prompting calls for government intervention.

The Mahakumbh, while a massive economic driver for some sectors, highlights the disparity between the government’s optimistic revenue projections and the on-the-ground realities faced by many attendees.
