Sat Feb 01 15:45:33 UTC 2025: ## Tamil Nadu Farmers Divided on Union Budget’s Impact

**Thanjavur/Tiruchi, February 1, 2025** – The Union Budget’s impact on farmers in Tamil Nadu has been met with mixed reactions, with some organizations praising certain initiatives while others express deep disappointment over unmet demands.

The Tamil Nadu Vivasayigal Sangam, affiliated with the CPI(M), strongly criticized the budget, stating it failed to address crucial farmer demands such as guaranteed minimum support prices (MSP) for agricultural produce, a one-time crop loan waiver, and increased subsidies for urea and other inputs. Similar concerns were raised by the Tamizhaga Cauvery Vivasayigal Sangam, which highlighted the lack of focus on organic farming and an increase in Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) assistance.

However, other farmer organizations offered a more positive assessment. The Bharathiya Kisan Sangam and farmers in the Tiruchi region welcomed the budget’s emphasis on boosting pulses, oilseed, and cotton production, along with increased credit access through Kisan Credit Cards. The increased credit limit to ₹5 lakh was seen as a positive step to prevent farmer migration and encourage rural entrepreneurship.

Despite this, concerns remain about the lack of announcements on ensuring profitable prices for farm produce, GST exemptions for farm inputs, and increased PM-KISAN assistance. One association president voiced apprehension about the effective implementation of the budget’s pro-agriculture measures in states with strained relationships with the central government. The disparity in opinions highlights the complex and diverse needs of Tamil Nadu’s farming community.
