Sat Feb 01 12:08:39 UTC 2025: ## Balochistan Bloodshed: 42 Dead in Clashes Between Paramilitaries and Separatists
**QUETTA, Pakistan –** At least 42 people have been killed in two separate but related incidents in Pakistan’s restive Balochistan province, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing conflict between security forces and separatist groups. The violence highlights the growing instability in the region, fueled by sectarian, ethnic, and separatist tensions.
On Saturday, a vehicle carrying unarmed Frontier Corps paramilitaries came under heavy fire from approximately 70-80 armed assailants who had erected a roadblock near Mangochar. According to police officials, 18 paramilitary soldiers were killed, and three others seriously injured. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group, claimed responsibility for the attack, reporting a slightly lower death toll. Following the ambush, the military conducted “clearance operations,” resulting in the deaths of at least 11 attackers.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, an attack on a Pakistani security post near the Afghan border was thwarted. Details of casualties from this incident remain scarce.
These latest attacks follow a pattern of escalating violence in Balochistan. In recent months, the region has witnessed a dramatic increase in attacks claimed by the BLA, including major assaults in January, November, and August resulting in dozens of casualties. The ongoing conflict has claimed the lives of hundreds this year alone, with the military reporting 383 soldiers and 925 fighters killed in border clashes in 2024.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the Saturday attack. The escalating violence in Balochistan is occurring amidst worsening relations between Pakistan and the Taliban in Afghanistan, contributing to the volatile security situation. The mineral-rich province continues to be a focal point of conflict, with various armed groups vying for control and challenging the Pakistani state.
