Sat Feb 01 16:09:39 UTC 2025: ## Market Massacre: 56 Dead, 158 Wounded in Sudan Attack

**Omdurman, Sudan** – At least 56 people were killed and 158 wounded in a brutal attack on a vegetable market in Omdurman, Sudan, on Saturday. The Sudanese Health Ministry blames the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for the shelling and air strikes which witnesses described as indiscriminate and devastating.

The attack, which involved artillery fire from western Omdurman and drone support, targeted the bustling market, causing widespread destruction and a horrifying number of casualties, including many women and children. One survivor recounted the scene, stating that “the shells fell in the middle of the vegetable market, that’s why there are so many victims and wounded.”

Overwhelmed hospitals, such as al-Nao Hospital, appealed for urgent assistance, desperately needing shrouds, blood donors, and stretchers to cope with the influx of casualties.

Government spokesperson Khalid al-Aleisir strongly condemned the attack, calling it a “criminal act” and a “blatant violation of international humanitarian law.” He added that the attack further adds to the RSF’s already bloody record.

This incident follows a separate air attack in Khartoum, where two civilians were killed and dozens wounded in an attack on an RSF-controlled area. The violence comes a day after RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Daglo vowed to retake the capital from the Sudanese army.

The ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the RSF, which began in April 2023, has already claimed tens of thousands of lives, displaced millions, and pushed half the population into hunger. The UN estimates that 3.6 million people have fled the capital, Khartoum, which has become a devastated city, with entire neighborhoods emptied and controlled by warring factions. At least 106,000 people are estimated to be suffering from famine in Khartoum, with millions more experiencing crisis levels of hunger. The crisis continues to deepen, with the Saturday market attack serving as a stark reminder of the human cost of the ongoing war.
