**KOCHI, February 1, 2025** – Five senior CPI(M) leaders in Kerala have been granted anticipatory bail by the Ernakulam District and Sessions Court. The leaders, including the Koothattukulam area secretary and municipal chairperson, were accused in a case related to the alleged assault and abduction of a fellow party member, Kala Raju, a municipal councillor.

The case, registered by Koothattukulam police, involved a total of 47 accused. While six to seven other accused were arrested and subsequently released on bail, these five prominent leaders had sought anticipatory bail, arguing that the charges, including kidnapping under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, were baseless and filed with malicious intent. Their plea highlighted the lack of corroborating evidence, including Ms. Raju’s initial statement at the hospital which did not mention any abduction. The court accepted their arguments and granted the bail application.
