Sat Jan 25 06:20:00 UTC 2025: ## Drake’s Lawsuit Against Universal Music Faces Dismissal

**NEW YORK/TEXAS –** Universal Music Group (UMG) is seeking to dismiss rapper Drake’s pre-suit deposition request, arguing the claims lack evidence and are intended to stifle free speech. The motion, filed in Bexar County, Texas, targets Drake’s petition alleging UMG artificially inflated Kendrick Lamar’s hit song, “Not Like Us,” as part of a promotional scheme.

Drake initially filed petitions in both New York and Texas in November 2024, but withdrew the New York petition. The Texas petition, however, remains, prompting UMG’s 144-page response. UMG’s motion cites the Texas Citizens Participation Act, arguing Drake’s petition is a retaliatory lawsuit designed to intimidate.

The record company contends Drake hasn’t provided sufficient evidence to support his claims, particularly the allegation that UMG funneled payments to iHeartMedia for preferential radio play. UMG dismisses Drake’s unnamed sources as inadmissible hearsay.

UMG requests the court dismiss the petition, halt all discovery, and order Drake to cover their legal fees. Separately, Drake’s attorney has requested an extension to respond to a potential UMG motion to dismiss a related New York complaint.

The legal battle stems from a high-profile rap feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, which saw Lamar’s “Not Like Us” emerge as a major hit. The ongoing dispute underscores the intense rivalry between the two artists and highlights the complexities of the music industry’s promotional practices.
