CHICAGO (ABC7) – Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were reportedly denied entry to Hamline Elementary School on Chicago’s South Side Friday morning, prompting a response from Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and the Chicago Teachers Union (CTU).
According to CPS officials, ICE agents arrived at the school around 11:15 a.m. The principal followed established protocol and refused entry to the agents. CPS emphasized that all students and staff are safe and that the district will continue to protect students and families in accordance with the Illinois TRUST Act and Chicago’s Welcoming City Ordinance.
CTU President Stacy Davis Gates called the incident unprecedented. Both CPS and CTU officials stressed that schools are safe havens and that CPS does not collect citizenship information nor will it allow ICE agents access without a valid judicial warrant.
Chicago Police Department confirmed they were not notified of the alleged incident. ICE has yet to comment publicly. The incident follows the Trump administration’s announcement of pursuing deportation targets at schools. The situation remains under development.
