**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, January 25, 2025** – Former Bollywood actress Mamta Kulkarni has embarked on a spiritual journey, renouncing her acting career and taking sanyas (renunciation) at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. On Friday, she was consecrated as a Mahamandaleshwar, a high title within the Kinnar Akhara (a monastic order for transgender individuals), adopting the name Mai Mamta Nand Giri.
The 52-year-old actress, who had been undertaking penance for 23 years, underwent a formal consecration ceremony after performing Pind Daan (a ritual offering) at the Sangam (confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna rivers). She received blessings from Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Laxmi Narayan Tripathi and Mahant Ravindra Puri, president of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad (ABAP).
Kulkarni stated that she chose Tripathi as her guru due to the auspicious day and planetary alignments, emphasizing the significance of this particular Maha Kumbh. She also confirmed facing an examination process to earn the Mahamandaleshwar title, which involved demonstrating 23 years of spiritual practice.
While some of her fans and others expressed concern over her decision, Kulkarni stated that her path is divinely ordained and she feels blessed to be part of this sacred event. Representatives from the Kinnar Akhara confirmed her involvement, noting her previous association with the Juna Akhara and recent connection with their order.
The process of becoming a Mahamandaleshwar, according to Mahant Balak Das of the Patalpuri Math, involves rigorous spiritual discipline, including extensive chanting and limited sleep. Kulkarni’s induction adds another significant dimension to this year’s Maha Kumbh Mela.
