Fri Jan 24 06:11:06 UTC 2025: ## Pune Battles Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak; One Death Reported
**Pune, India (January 24, 2025)** – A cluster of Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) cases has prompted a public health response in Pune. One death has been reported, and 13 patients are currently on ventilators due to the rare neurological disorder, in which the immune system attacks the nervous system.
The National Institute of Virology (NIV) has identified norovirus and Campylobacter jejuni bacteria in samples from 21 patients. These pathogens, often transmitted through contaminated food and water, cause symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting, similar to early GBS symptoms. Authorities are initiating a super chlorination drive of water bodies to reduce the bacterial and viral load.
While GBS itself isn’t preventable, maintaining good hygiene and a healthy lifestyle can reduce the risk, according to the Cleveland Clinic. Recommendations include a balanced diet, regular exercise, thorough handwashing, vaccination, surface disinfection, and avoiding contact with sick individuals.
Recovery from GBS can be lengthy, with some experiencing residual muscle weakness. Individuals experiencing symptoms are urged to seek immediate medical attention. Mental health support is also advised to cope with the potential stress of the illness. Online searches for Guillain-Barré Syndrome have spiked significantly in the past 24 hours.
