Wed Jan 22 18:06:13 UTC 2025: ## Trump Threatens New Tariffs on Russia Unless Ukraine War Ends

**Washington, D.C. –** Former U.S. President Donald Trump issued a new threat on Wednesday, January 22nd, 2025, stating he would impose significant new tariffs and sanctions on Russia if a deal to end the war in Ukraine isn’t reached swiftly. This escalates his previous comments suggesting sanctions were a possibility.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared that he would levy “high levels of Taxes, Tariffs, and Sanctions on anything being sold by Russia to the United States, and various other participating countries” if negotiations fail. He did not specify which countries would be subject to these measures or what constitutes “participation.”

While expressing fondness for the Russian people and President Putin, Trump stressed the need to end the conflict, suggesting it would be a “FAVOR” to both Russia and Putin to do so. He also referenced Russia’s assistance in World War II.

This announcement comes after the Biden administration already implemented substantial sanctions against numerous Russian entities across various sectors. Recent sanctions targeted Russia’s energy sector and its “dark fleet” of tankers used to circumvent Western trade restrictions.

Although Trump has previously used tariffs to pressure other countries on non-trade issues (including Mexico, Canada, and China), the volume of U.S. imports from Russia has significantly decreased since 2021. The U.S. halted Russian oil imports following the invasion, leaving imports primarily limited to precious metals.

The Biden administration has also sanctioned entities in China, North Korea, and Iran for allegedly supporting Russia’s war effort. Trump’s statement leaves open the possibility that these countries could also face his new tariffs.
