CHENNAI, January 24, 2025 – Contract laborers employed by the Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) are set to receive significant improvements in wages and benefits following recent negotiations with the CMWSSB Labourers’ Union.

According to a written communication from the board, action will be taken to address various demands raised by the union earlier this month. Key improvements include a wage increase based on the 2024-25 schedule of rates, impacting overhead tank operators and other workers. Daily wages are projected to rise from ₹355 to between ₹700 and ₹900, depending on the worker’s category, according to G. Beem Rao, the union’s president.

Work hours will be standardized at eight hours per day, with potential extensions during emergencies. The board has also committed to providing uniforms and safety gear, as well as night shift allowances and addressing outstanding vacancies. The union, affiliated with the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), expects these improvements to be implemented within a month. Further discussions on issues such as permanent job opportunities are scheduled for a meeting in February.
