**KOCHI, INDIA** – Malayalam cinema veteran Mammootty stars in Gautham Vasudev Menon’s directorial debut in the Malayalam film industry, “Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse.” While the film boasts a promising premise – a blend of thriller and humor centered around a boastful, financially strapped private detective – critics say the execution falls short of its potential.
The film features Mammootty as Dominic, a former police officer turned private investigator, navigating a chaotic life in a cramped apartment. His character is portrayed as both charming and flawed, boasting about his skills while struggling financially. His sidekick, played by Gokul Suresh, provides comedic relief with his unabashed admiration for Dominic, reminiscent of a classic Watson figure. The introduction of a beautiful dancer, played by Sushmitha Bhat, adds a crucial twist to the narrative.
Despite Mammootty’s strong performance and a plot that builds logically, the film suffers from weak execution in several areas. The music, composed by Darbuka Siva, is deemed disappointing and unfitting, particularly a birthday song sequence involving Mammootty and Gokul. Furthermore, the action sequences, featuring actors like Shine Tom Chacko and Dinesh Prabhakar, are criticized as underwhelming.
While the script, penned by Gautham Menon with Neeraj Rajan and Sooraj Rajan, holds promise, the reviewer notes that the film only becomes truly engaging towards the end. Despite a strong premise and talented cast, “Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse” ultimately fails to fully capitalize on its potential, leaving the audience with a film that is less than the sum of its parts.
