**Chennai, January 24, 2025** – The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) announced that land acquisition for its Phase II project will be completed within the next four months. The project, encompassing three corridors spanning 118.9 km, has faced delays, primarily due to design changes along Rajiv Gandhi Salai in corridor 3 (Madhavaram to SIPCOT).
While 99% of the required 116.24 hectares of land has already been acquired, the remaining 2.02 hectares will be secured by May. The delays stemmed from the need for additional land to accommodate revised designs for entry/exit structures along Rajiv Gandhi Salai, ensuring minimal disruption to the road and pedestrian walkways. The additional land acquisition primarily involves parcels of land between Sholinganallur and SIPCOT in Siruseri, as well as smaller plots across the city.
The Phase II project, initiated six years ago, has seen significant revisions. The project cost has been revised multiple times, decreasing from an initial ₹88,000 crore to its current estimate of ₹63,846 crore. Similarly, the land requirement increased from 112.72 hectares to 116.24 hectares.
