**Kabul, Afghanistan –** The Islamic State (IS) has claimed responsibility for the murder of a Chinese national in Afghanistan’s Takhar province, according to a statement posted on its Telegram channel late Wednesday. Afghan police had earlier reported the killing and launched a preliminary investigation, but the perpetrators remained unknown at the time.
The IS statement alleges the group targeted a vehicle carrying the Chinese citizen, resulting in his death and damage to the vehicle.
China, which was the first country to appoint an ambassador to Afghanistan under the Taliban regime, has expressed its commitment to strengthening trade and investment ties with the country. However, despite the Taliban’s pledge to restore security after seizing power in 2021, attacks, many claimed by IS, continue. A notable example was a 2022 assault on a Kabul hotel frequented by Chinese investors. This latest incident underscores the ongoing security challenges facing Afghanistan.
