Fri Jan 24 15:59:11 UTC 2025: **Fishermen Demand Protective Committee Amidst Development Concerns in Chennai**
**Chennai, January 25, 2025** – Fishermen from Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam have voiced strong concerns over several development projects they say threaten their livelihoods. A meeting held Friday, led by the Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam panchayat sabha, highlighted anxieties surrounding a proposed 15-km sea link bridge, Blue Flag certification plans for several beaches, and the Chennai Shoreline Renourishment and Revitalization project.
Fishermen argue that the sea link bridge could block access to vital fishing grounds. Similarly, the Blue Flag initiative, aimed at improving beach amenities, is feared to restrict the use of large fishing nets and fish-drying areas. The shoreline revitalization project, already underway in other areas, is also causing worry about reduced access to fishing zones.
To address these concerns, the fishing community is demanding the formation of a committee comprising local representatives from panchayats stretching from Triplicane to Kanathur Reddikuppam. They also seek long-term solutions for housing and the challenges posed by rising sea levels.
M. Chandrasekhar of Thiruvanmiyur Kuppam expressed hope that the proposed committee will effectively represent the fishermen’s concerns and prevent future development from compromising their traditional way of life. The situation underscores a growing conflict between development initiatives and the needs of local fishing communities in Chennai.
