Tue Jan 21 14:14:54 UTC 2025: ## Bangladesh Seeks Hasina’s Extradition from India

**DHAKA, BANGLADESH (January 22, 2025)** — Bangladesh’s interim government vowed on Tuesday to continue its efforts to extradite deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India, threatening international intervention if necessary. Law Adviser Asif Nazrul stated that India’s refusal to return Ms. Hasina, who fled to India in August 2024 following a student-led uprising, would violate the extradition treaty between the two nations.

Ms. Hasina, 77, is wanted by Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on charges of “crimes against humanity and genocide.” Dhaka previously requested her extradition via diplomatic note. Mr. Nazrul confirmed that further action, including seeking international support and utilizing the existing red alert, will be taken if India does not comply.

The extradition treaty allows for refusal if the offense is deemed political, and also stipulates that extradition is not required for offenses resulting in less than four months of imprisonment.

Tensions between India and Bangladesh have risen since the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, took power. India has voiced concerns regarding attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, a concern echoed by Ms. Hasina, who accuses the interim government of genocide and neglecting minority protection.
