Fri Jan 24 18:16:52 UTC 2025: ## Former Bollywood Actress Mamta Kulkarni to Become Mahamandaleshwar at Kumbh Mela
**Prayagraj, India** – Mamta Kulkarni, a well-known actress from the 1990s, is set to embrace a new chapter in her life. She will be ordained as a Mahamandaleshwar (a high-ranking spiritual leader) in the Kinnar Akhada (a monastic order for transgender individuals) at the ongoing Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Friday evening. This follows her taking sannyas (renunciation) earlier in the day and performing pind daan (ritual offering for the deceased) at the Sangam confluence.
Kulkarni, who will adopt the new name Mamta Nand Giri, arrived at the Kumbh Mela on Friday afternoon clad in saffron robes. She met with the Acharya Mahamandaleshwar Dr. Lakshmi Narayan Tripathi of the Kinnar Akhada and Swami Jay Ambanand Giri of the Juna Akhada. She praised the arrangements at the Kumbh Mela and took blessings from various saints. She also performed a ritual bath in the Ganges River.
Kulkarni’s transformation comes after a period of approximately 12 years living a secluded life following her departure from the Bollywood film industry. She previously stated her desire to dedicate her life to spirituality, asserting that her life’s purpose was to serve God. She famously said that she had left Bollywood for spiritual growth, comparing a return to acting to “turning ghee back into milk”. Reports suggest she spent this time in deep spiritual practice, foregoing makeup and mirrors for twelve years.
Her decision to become a Mahamandaleshwar follows an Instagram post earlier this week where she announced her attendance at the Kumbh Mela, detailing her plans to bathe in the Ganges on Mauni Amavasya (January 29th) and visit Kashi Vishwanath and Ayodhya. She also mentioned performing pinda daan for her parents.
Kulkarni’s journey from a leading Bollywood actress to a high-ranking spiritual leader marks a significant transformation, capturing attention amidst the numerous spiritual figures at this year’s Kumbh Mela.
