**AJMER, RAJASTHAN** – A Dalit groom’s wedding procession in Ajmer district, Rajasthan, proceeded peacefully on Tuesday under heavy police protection. Concerns raised by the bride’s family about potential opposition from upper-caste villagers prompted the deployment of approximately 200 police personnel.

Vijay Regar, the groom, rode a mare to Lavera village for his wedding to Aruna Khorwal. The bride’s family, anticipating trouble, had contacted local authorities and activists, including Ramesh Chand Bansal of the Manav Vikas Avam Adhikar Kendra Sansthan. Bansal subsequently contacted the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and local police.

Ajmer Superintendent of Police Vandita Rana confirmed that the wedding procession, including the traditional Bindoli ceremony, proceeded without incident thanks to the strong police presence. While the family had initially planned a more elaborate celebration, they opted to forgo DJ music and firecrackers as a precaution.

Narayan Khorwal, the bride’s father, explained that the family’s proactive approach stemmed from past experiences of violence at wedding processions. He emphasized the importance of not allowing fear to dictate their lives. Despite initial apprehension, the wedding was ultimately a success, thanks to the cooperative efforts of the villagers and the substantial police presence.
