Thu Jan 23 15:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Surprise Stimulus Checks Arrive for 1 Million Taxpayers

**Detroit, MI –** The IRS is issuing surprise stimulus payments totaling an estimated $2.4 billion to approximately 1 million taxpayers who overlooked claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns. These payments, part of the third round of COVID-19 stimulus relief, are being sent automatically via direct deposit or mail, with most expected to arrive by late January.

The IRS discovered these eligible individuals during an internal data review. Many likely didn’t realize they qualified for the credit, either leaving the relevant line blank or entering $0 on their 2021 returns. Eligible taxpayers do not need to take any action to receive the funds.

The Recovery Rebate Credit offered up to $1,400 per individual, or $2,800 for married couples filing jointly, plus additional amounts for qualifying dependents. The actual amount received varies depending on individual income and number of dependents. The IRS notes that the credit’s income limits were stricter than previous stimulus programs.

While the average payment is approximately $2,400, those who received advance payments in 2021 will not receive a supplemental payment. Similarly, those who did not file a 2021 tax return, were claimed as a dependent, or are non-resident aliens are ineligible.

IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel stated that the agency is “committed to going the extra mile for taxpayers.” He explained the automatic payments were implemented to avoid the complex process of filing amended returns.

Taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2021 tax returns have until April 15, 2024 to do so and claim the credit. The IRS emphasizes that even those with minimal or no income should file if eligible. Importantly, these payments are not counted as income for federal benefit programs. The IRS will reissue payments to the address of record if a listed bank account has been closed.
