**NEW DELHI, January 23, 2025** – The Indian government is investigating ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber for allegedly charging iPhone users higher prices than Android users for the same rides. Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi announced the investigation on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, confirming that notices have been issued to both companies.
The investigation follows numerous reports in local media and social media complaints alleging price discrimination. The government’s Central Consumer Protection Agency (CCPA) is examining these claims after receiving complaints through the National Consumer Helpline.
Minister Joshi stated that the CCPA will also investigate similar pricing practices in other sectors, including food delivery and online ticketing. Neither Ola nor Uber has yet commented on the allegations.
This action comes after the Minister previously denounced differential pricing as an unfair trade practice violating consumer rights. The investigation holds significant weight given India’s position as one of Uber’s largest markets globally, where it faces intense competition from Ola, Rapido, and BluSmart.
Separately, the government has also issued a notice to Apple through the CCPA regarding complaints of performance issues with iPhones following the iOS 18+ software update. The notice seeks a response from Apple addressing these grievances.
