**Washington, D.C. –** President Donald Trump on Wednesday sharply criticized the Episcopal Bishop of Washington, Mariann Budde, demanding an apology after she appealed to him during his inaugural prayer service to show mercy towards the LGBTQ+ community and undocumented immigrants.
Bishop Budde, in her sermon at the Washington National Cathedral, referenced Trump’s belief in divine protection, urging him to extend compassion to vulnerable groups. This prompted a furious response from the President, who deemed the service “boring and uninspiring” and the Bishop’s remarks “inappropriate.” He further attacked Bishop Budde on social media, calling her a “Radical Left hard line Trump hater.”
The President’s criticism followed an inauguration service intended to promote national unity. While the service included diverse religious leaders, notably absent were conservative evangelical leaders, typically strong Trump supporters. Despite this, several prominent evangelical figures attended the ceremony.
The service’s focus on national unity, rather than the new administration, was a deliberate shift from previous inaugural prayer services, reflecting a desire to foster a more inclusive tone.
Bishop Budde’s sermon, however, generated mixed reactions. While some praised her for directly addressing the President, others criticized her remarks as inappropriate for the setting. The cathedral spokesperson has yet to respond to requests for comment. This incident comes as the Trump administration has already enacted policies restricting transgender rights and tightening immigration enforcement.
