Wed Jan 22 21:40:42 UTC 2025: ## Nashville High School Shooting Leaves One Student Dead, Another Injured

**Nashville, TN –** A 17-year-old student opened fire at Antioch High School in Nashville, Tennessee on Wednesday, killing a 16-year-old female classmate and wounding a male student. The shooter, also a student at the school, subsequently died by suicide.

The shooting occurred around 11 a.m. CDT in the school cafeteria. Police Chief John Drake stated that the shooter “confronted” the female victim before opening fire. The male student sustained a graze wound and was released from the hospital. Another student received treatment for a facial injury sustained during a fall.

Despite the presence of two school resource officers in the building, they were not near the cafeteria when the shooting took place. By the time they arrived, the shooting was over, and the shooter had already taken his own life.

The incident has left the community reeling, with parents scrambling to reunite with their children at a nearby family safety center. Many expressed concerns about school safety, with some parents considering homeschooling and others criticizing the lack of metal detectors at the school. One grandmother noted the stark contrast between childhood disputes of her generation and the current prevalence of lethal violence among youth.

The shooting comes nearly two years after a mass shooting at a Nashville elementary school, which resulted in six deaths, including three children. Despite widespread calls for gun control following that tragedy, Republican lawmakers in the state have resisted implementing stricter measures, instead focusing on increased school security. This includes a recent bill allowing some teachers and staff to carry concealed weapons on school grounds, without informing parents or other teachers of who is armed. Antioch has also experienced other significant shootings in recent years, highlighting the ongoing issue of gun violence in the area.
