**Seoul, South Korea** – South Korea’s Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) has recommended that impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol be charged with insurrection and abuse of power. The recommendation follows an investigation into Yoon’s short-lived declaration of martial law in December.
The CIO alleges that Yoon attempted to “exclude state authority or disrupt the constitutional order” by suspending civil rule. The case has been transferred to the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office, which has 11 days to decide whether to indict Yoon.
Yoon’s arrest last week, the first of a sitting South Korean president, followed his refusal to cooperate with investigators. His legal team contests the CIO’s authority and claims his arrest was unlawful. Insurrection, under South Korean law, carries a potential life sentence or death penalty, although executions are effectively suspended.
Separately, the Constitutional Court is reviewing Yoon’s impeachment, with a decision expected within 180 days. During his appearance before the court, Yoon denied allegations that he ordered troops to forcibly remove lawmakers to prevent them from overturning his martial law decree.
Finance Minister Choi Sang-mok is currently serving as acting president. This follows the impeachment of Yoon’s initial successor, Han Duck-soo, for refusing to fill vacancies on the Constitutional Court. The political situation remains highly volatile as the nation awaits the prosecutors’ decision and the Constitutional Court’s ruling on Yoon’s impeachment.
