Wed Jan 22 19:44:50 UTC 2025: ## Chennai’s Singara Chennai Travel Card a Hit: 12,500 Sold

**Chennai, January 23, 2025** – The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC)’s new Singara Chennai Travel Card has proven popular, with nearly 12,500 cards sold since its launch on January 6th. The card, designed for cashless transactions on buses and metro trains, is part of the national common mobility card system and aims to modernize Chennai’s public transport ticketing.

Transport Minister S.S. Sivasankar launched the initiative, which saw 3,900 MTC buses equipped with electronic ticketing machines last year. MTC Managing Director Alby John Varghese highlighted the card’s offline functionality and ability to store any value, with fares deducted upon swiping. The card is currently in use on over 60% of the MTC’s bus fleet.

The initial phase of the project aims to distribute 50,000 free cards, provided by the State Bank of India, at major bus stations across the city, including Koyambedu, Broadway, and Tambaram. While the card facilitates travel on buses and metro trains, it is currently not valid for suburban train tickets.
