Thu Jan 23 11:15:20 UTC 2025: ## CPI(M) Leader Accuses Karnataka CM and Deputy CM of Neglecting Tribal Rights
**Mangaluru, January 23, 2025** – Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat criticized Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar for allegedly prioritizing their power struggle over addressing the needs of oppressed tribal groups, particularly the Koraga community.
Speaking at an Adivasi Aakrosh rally in Mangaluru, Karat accused the Congress government of inaction despite winning power with the support of Koragas and other tribal communities. She stated that the Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister are engaged in a “fake wrestling match” (nakli kushti) for power instead of focusing on development and resolving pressing issues.
Karat highlighted the plight of the Koraga community, noting a significant decline in their population over the past two decades, attributed to poor government policies and lack of access to healthcare and education. She also pointed out the continued violation of their constitutional rights, including the persistence of untouchability despite its legal prohibition.
The Adivasi Aakrosh Manch, of which Karat is national vice-president, is demanding the implementation of pro-tribal laws, compensation for historical injustices, and increased budgetary allocations for particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs). Karat cited the Kerala government’s successful program providing nutritious food to tribal households as a model for Karnataka to emulate. The Manch plans to closely monitor the upcoming Union and Karnataka budgets to ensure sufficient funding for PVTG development. The rally aimed to highlight the Koragas’ struggle for a dignified life and the protection of their constitutional rights. Other speakers at the rally included Karnataka State Convener of Adivasi Hakkugala Samanvaya Samiti Krishnappa Konchady and CPI(M) district secretary Muneer Katipalla.
