Thu Jan 23 10:11:01 UTC 2025: ## Shubman Gill’s Disappointing Ranji Trophy Debut Fuels BCCI’s Stricter Domestic Cricket Mandate

**Bengaluru, India** – Team India star Shubman Gill’s much-anticipated return to domestic cricket ended in disappointment. The opening batsman, playing for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy second league, was dismissed for a single-digit score against Karnataka. Gill’s failure highlights the recent struggles of several key Indian players, including captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, in Test matches.

In response, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has strengthened its mandate requiring national team players to participate in domestic cricket when not on international duty. This has led to prominent players like Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal (Mumbai), Rishabh Pant (Delhi), and Gill (Punjab) featuring in the Ranji Trophy. Kohli, however, missed the match due to a neck injury.

Gill’s dismissal came early in Punjab’s innings against Karnataka. After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Karnataka’s Abhilash Shetty quickly removed Gill, along with his opening partner Prabhsimran Singh, in successive overs. The left-arm pacer’s performance underscored the BCCI’s renewed focus on ensuring national players maintain their form and match fitness through consistent domestic competition.
