**West Lafayette, IN** – The No. 4 USC Trojans (18-2, 8-0) overcame an unexpectedly strong start by Purdue (7-12, 0-8 Big Ten) to secure their 13th consecutive victory, defeating the Boilermakers 79-37 at Mackey Arena.
Purdue stunned the Trojans early, leading 16-15 after the first quarter thanks to a hot start from guard Destini Lombard. However, USC’s superior talent and depth took over in the second quarter, outscoring Purdue 31-2 to effectively seal the game.
While USC star JuJu Watkins, a National Player of the Year candidate, scored 16 points and grabbed 7 rebounds, it was freshman guard Avery Howell who led the Trojans in scoring with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Howell’s performance proved crucial as Purdue focused its defense on containing Watkins and Kiki Iriafen.
Purdue’s offense sputtered after the first quarter, struggling to penetrate USC’s defense and committing numerous turnovers. Freshman center Kendall Puryear was the Boilermakers’ leading scorer with 10 points, while Lombard’s strong first quarter was followed by a scoreless remainder of the game.
The Boilermakers’ increased turnover rate (a total of 21 for the game) significantly contributed to USC’s victory. Despite a valiant effort in the early stages, Purdue ultimately couldn’t match the Trojans’ firepower and consistency. Purdue will look to rebound on the road against Illinois on Monday.
