CASTAIC, CA – A fast-moving wildfire, dubbed the Hughes Fire, is raging through the Castaic Lake area of Los Angeles County, forcing the evacuation of approximately 18,600 residents. The blaze, which has already consumed an estimated 21 square kilometers (8.1 square miles), is fueled by strong Santa Ana winds and red flag fire conditions.

Authorities issued immediate evacuation orders citing an “immediate threat to life,” referencing the devastation caused by previous wildfires in the area, including the Eaton and Palisades fires which claimed 28 lives and left thousands homeless. Sheriff Robert Jensen urged residents to comply with evacuation orders to avoid a similar tragedy.

Firefighting crews from the Los Angeles County Fire Department and Angeles National Forest are battling the blaze from the ground, aided by water-dropping aircraft. Dramatic video footage captured the fire’s rapid spread across hillsides. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

While the Hughes Fire continues to spread, the earlier Eaton and Palisades fires are showing progress, with containment levels at 91% and 70% respectively. These fires, which began January 7th, caused widespread damage, destroying or damaging nearly 16,000 structures. AccuWeather estimates the total economic loss from the recent wildfires in the Los Angeles area could exceed $250 billion.

President Trump announced plans to visit Los Angeles on Friday.
