Thu Jan 23 10:39:50 UTC 2025: ## Coimbatore Man Found Guilty of ‘Honor Killing’

**COIMBATORE, January 23, 2025** – A special court in Coimbatore has convicted a 30-year-old man, K. Vinothkumar, for the 2019 “honor killing” of his younger brother and his brother’s 16-year-old Scheduled Caste girlfriend. The murders took place near Mettupalayam.

Vinothkumar was found guilty of double murder under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Three other men, initially accused of abetment, were acquitted. The court will announce Vinothkumar’s sentence on January 29.

According to the prosecution, Vinothkumar opposed his brother’s relationship with the girl, fearing it would affect his own marriage prospects. He plotted the killings with three others, who allegedly provided assistance before and after the murders. The brother and his girlfriend were attacked on June 25, 2019; the brother died immediately, and the girl succumbed to her injuries four days later.

The parents of the victim girl were present in court for the verdict. The case highlights the ongoing issue of caste-based violence in India.
