Thu Jan 23 05:11:39 UTC 2025: ## Thailand Becomes Third Asian Country to Legalize Same-Sex Marriage

**Bangkok, Thailand –** Hundreds of LGBTQ+ couples in Thailand celebrated the landmark legalization of same-sex marriage on January 23rd, 2025, as the Marriage Equality Act came into effect. The law, which passed through both houses of Parliament, amends the Civil and Commercial Code to replace gendered terms with inclusive language, granting same-sex couples equal rights in areas such as finances, inheritance, and healthcare.

Thailand is now the first Southeast Asian and third Asian nation (after Taiwan and Nepal) to legalize same-sex unions, marking a significant step towards LGBTQ+ equality in the region. Around 300 couples participated in a gala celebration in Bangkok to register their marriages, with many more expected to register across the country.

While Thailand is known for its relatively progressive social attitudes, advocates have worked for decades to achieve this legal recognition, facing challenges in a largely conservative society. Couples interviewed expressed relief and happiness, emphasizing the importance of equal legal rights and the alleviation of future anxieties.

The Bangkok city government and the Interior Ministry conducted workshops to ensure officials at district offices were equipped to handle marriage registrations sensitively and inclusively, addressing concerns about potential bureaucratic obstacles. The successful implementation of the law is seen as a testament to societal readiness and a positive step towards full inclusion for LGBTQ+ individuals in Thailand.
