Thu Jan 23 08:07:30 UTC 2025: ## 13 Passengers Killed, 10 Injured After Being Hit by Train in Maharashtra
**Jalgaon, Maharashtra –** At least 13 passengers were killed and 10 others injured when they were struck by a passing train after disembarking from the Pushpak Express in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, Wednesday evening. The incident occurred near Pachora station around 5 pm.
According to Jalgaon Guardian Minister Gulabrao Patil, a chain-pulling incident on the Pushpak Express caused the train to stop abruptly. Sparks from the emergency brakes sparked a rumour among passengers in the general compartment that the train was on fire. Panicked passengers jumped off the train, only to be struck by the Karnataka Express, traveling at over 130 kmph on an adjacent track. The Karnataka Express driver, while seeing the Pushpak Express’s flashing lights, was unable to brake in time due to a curve in the track that obstructed visibility.
The deceased include nine men and three women, three of whom were Nepalese nationals. Four of the injured are in critical condition. Most of the passengers were from Uttar Pradesh, traveling from Lucknow to Mumbai.
Central Railway confirmed that there was no fire on the Pushpak Express. An investigation into the initial chain-pulling incident is underway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences and announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 2 lakh from the PMNRF for the victims’ families. The Railway Ministry announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1.5 lakh for the deceased, Rs 50,000 for those with grievous injuries, and Rs 5,000 for those with minor injuries. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced a state-level financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased, along with coverage of medical expenses for the injured.
The state government, along with railway authorities, responded swiftly, dispatching ambulances and medical aid. An Accident Relief Train was sent from Bhusaval. Authorities are working to identify the remaining bodies.
