**Jalgaon, Maharashtra, January 23, 2025** – At least 13 people died and 10 were injured in a train collision near Pachora town in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra, on January 22, 2025. The accident involved the Lucknow-Mumbai Pushpak Express and the Karnataka Express.
According to Central Railway officials, the Pushpak Express came to a halt after an emergency chain pull around 4:45 pm between Maheji and Pardhade stations. While stopped, with the flasher light activated and brakes applied, the train was struck by the Karnataka Express. Railway officials stated that a two-degree curve in the track obstructed visibility, significantly reducing braking distance. Despite this, officials claim both train drivers followed protocol and attempted to avoid the collision. A Central Railway PRO, Swapnil Nila, stated that even with the brakes applied, a train traveling at full speed requires at least 650 meters to stop.
The trains were traveling at speeds exceeding 100 kmph on this section of the trunk route. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar attributed the incident to a false fire alarm started by a tea seller.
On Thursday, January 23rd, ₹270,000 in ex-gratia payments were distributed to nine injured passengers at Vrindavan Hospital and Vighnaharta Pachora. Those with grievous injuries received ₹50,000 each, while those with simple injuries received ₹5,000 each. The investigation into the accident is ongoing.
