**Jalgaon, Maharashtra –** At least 12 people died and several others were injured Wednesday in a horrific train accident near Paranda railway station in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. The tragedy unfolded around 4:19 pm when passengers on the Pushpak Express, traveling from Lucknow to Mumbai, panicked after noticing smoke emanating from the train’s wheels, possibly due to a hot axle or brake failure.
Fearing a fire, passengers pulled the emergency chain and some jumped onto the tracks. Tragically, at that moment, the Bengaluru Express collided with them, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries. A further complication arose when some passengers from the Pushpak Express were also hit by the Karnataka Express.
Central Railway’s chief spokesperson, Swapnil Nila, confirmed the incident, stating that passengers from the Pushpak Express were struck by oncoming trains. The accident site is over 400 km from Mumbai.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed deep distress over the incident, offering condolences to the victims’ families and assuring swift action. He stated that the district administration is coordinating with railway officials to provide medical assistance to the injured, with eight ambulances dispatched and local hospitals placed on high alert. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed grief and ordered medical assistance for injured passengers from his state.
Senior railway officials are investigating the cause of the incident, focusing on the initial smoke reported on the Pushpak Express. The investigation is expected to shed further light on this devastating accident.
