**United Nations, NY** – The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) will mark the seventh annual International Day of Education on January 24th, 2025, focusing on the theme “AI and Education: Preserving Human Agency in a World of Automation.” This year’s observance highlights the crucial role education plays in navigating the rapid advancements of artificial intelligence and ensuring humans remain in control of technological change.
Established in 2018 by UNGA resolution 73/25, the International Day of Education underscores the vital link between education, peace, and development. UNESCO emphasizes that without inclusive and equitable quality education, global goals like gender equality and poverty reduction remain unattainable.
In 2024, amidst global conflicts, UNESCO prioritized education, addressing key challenges including data-driven policy, education for peace, climate change adaptation, digital transformation, and teacher empowerment. A new UNESCO report indicates progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) on education, showing increases in primary, lower secondary, and upper secondary school completion rates between 2015 and 2021. However, the report also notes that this progress was slower than in the preceding 15 years.
The International Day of Education serves as a platform to raise awareness, mobilize resources, and celebrate human achievements in the field of education. This year’s focus on AI and its implications for education underscores the ongoing need for adaptable and inclusive learning systems to meet the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving world.
