**New Delhi, January 23, 2025** – Popular AI chatbot ChatGPT experienced a significant global outage this afternoon, leaving thousands of users unable to access the service. Downdetector reported over 3,000 outage reports at the peak, with 89% specifically targeting ChatGPT functionality. While OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has yet to officially comment, the disruption appears widespread, impacting both the website and dedicated mobile apps.
Users reported receiving error messages, including “web server reported a bad gateway error,” and an inability to access conversation history. The outage also seems to have affected other OpenAI services, with some users experiencing issues with GPT-4o and GPT-4o mini models. A small percentage of outage reports involved OpenAI’s APIs.
This is not the first time ChatGPT has faced significant downtime. The service experienced a major outage in the US in December, also impacting other OpenAI services. The frequency of these outages raises concerns about the reliability of the increasingly popular AI platform. OpenAI has yet to provide an estimated time of restoration.
