Wed Jan 22 22:07:28 UTC 2025: ## American Shelton Storms into Australian Open Semi-Finals

**Melbourne, Australia** – Ben Shelton has become the last American standing in the Australian Open singles draw, securing a thrilling semi-final berth after a hard-fought four-set victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. The 22-year-old American triumphed 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4) in a nearly four-hour battle at Rod Laver Arena on Wednesday.

Shelton, who reached the US Open semi-finals last year, showcased his powerful game and exuberant personality, celebrating points with energetic displays throughout the match. Sonego mounted a determined comeback, winning the third set, but Shelton ultimately prevailed in a tense tiebreak. Following the victory, Shelton praised Sonego’s performance, calling the match “one of my favorite matches of my career.”

The win marks Shelton’s second Grand Slam semi-final appearance. He will face either World No. 1 Jannik Sinner or Australian favorite Alex de Minaur in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will pit seven-time champion Novak Djokovic against Alexander Zverev.

The American’s journey to the semi-finals comes after fellow countrymen Taylor Fritz and Tommy Paul were eliminated earlier in the tournament. Madison Keys remains the only other American competing in the singles competition.
