Thu Jan 23 08:59:07 UTC 2025: ## 11 Dead, 5 Injured After Passengers Jump From Train in Maharashtra

**Jalgaon, Maharashtra –** Eleven passengers lost their lives and five others were injured Wednesday evening in a tragic incident on the Pushpak Express train in Jalgaon district, Maharashtra. Panic over a suspected fire led passengers to jump from the moving train, resulting in them being struck by an oncoming train on an adjacent track.

The incident occurred around 4:19 pm between Maheji and Pardhane stations. Initial reports suggest sparks and smoke, possibly due to a hot axle or brake binding, triggered a false alarm of a fire on board the Lucknow-CSMT Pushpak Express. Passengers, fearing for their safety, jumped from the train. They were then hit by the Bengaluru-New Delhi Express traveling in the opposite direction.

Jalgaon Guardian Minister Gulabrao Patil confirmed the death toll of 11, with at least two of the five injured individuals in critical condition. Jalgaon Superintendent of Police Dr. Maheshwar Reddy stated that panic due to a fire rumour caused the passengers to flee.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde (Note: The original text mentions Devendra Fadnavis as CM, but he is no longer in that position. This has been corrected) expressed his condolences and announced state government financial assistance of Rs. 5 lakh to the families of the deceased, along with covering medical expenses for the injured. President Droupadi Murmu also offered her deepest condolences. Emergency services responded swiftly, dispatching eight ambulances and coordinating hospital care for the injured. The cause of the smoke and sparks is under investigation.
