Thu Jan 23 06:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Controversial LG Cup Final: Ke Jie Forfeits After Two Rule Infractions

**Seoul, South Korea** – The LG Cup final took a dramatic turn today as Chinese Go player Ke Jie was disqualified after two rule violations in the second game against South Korean player Byun Sang-il. The match, tied 1-1 going into the second game, ended abruptly after only 80 moves.

Ke Jie’s first infraction involved failing to place captured stones in the designated receptacle, a new rule implemented by the Korean Baduk Association last November. This resulted in a two-point penalty. Despite intervention from China’s head coach, Yu Bin, the penalty stood.

His second violation, occurring during the 80th move, involved not placing captured stones in the receptacle before pressing the game clock. This accumulated violation resulted in an immediate forfeiture. The win gives Byun Sang-il a 2-1 victory in the match.

This marks the first time a world Go championship final has ended due to rule infractions. Had Ke Jie won, he would have claimed his ninth world title, surpassing Gu Li to become China’s most successful world champion.

The new rule’s application has sparked controversy. Some argue the rule, introduced in November, should not apply retroactively to a tournament that began in May. Concerns have also been raised regarding the rule’s practicality and its potential to unfairly disadvantage international players competing in Korea. Critics point to the lack of clarity in situations involving large exchanges of stones, as well as the potential for strategic exploitation of the rule by opponents.

The actions of Byun Sang-il, who pointed out Ke Jie’s infractions, have also drawn criticism. While adhering to the rules, some commentators suggest his approach lacked sportsmanship, prioritizing victory over fair play. The focus on rule enforcement rather than the game itself, they contend, is unbecoming of a top-level Go player.

The final game will now take place on October 23rd.
