Thu Jan 23 09:45:12 UTC 2025: ## India’s Vice-Captain Gill Flops on Ranji Trophy Debut
**Bengaluru:** Shubman Gill, vice-captain of India’s Champions Trophy team, endured a disappointing return to domestic cricket on Thursday. After a lackluster performance in Australia, Gill, hoping to regain form, was dismissed for just four runs off eight balls while opening for Punjab against Karnataka in the Ranji Trophy. He was caught by Krishnan Sreeraj off Abhilash Shetty’s bowling.
Punjab’s innings ended shortly before lunch at a paltry 55 runs in 29 overs. Gill’s early dismissal triggered a collapse, with Prabhsimran Singh (6), Pukhraj Mann (1), Anmolpreet Singh (0), Sanvir Singh (1), and Sandeep Bajwa (0) all failing to make a significant contribution. Only Ramandeep Singh (16) and Mayank Markande (12) reached double figures for Punjab.
Gill, captaining Punjab in the absence of Abhishek Sharma (currently with the Indian T20 team), opened the innings with Prabhsimran Singh. Karnataka’s bowling attack proved too strong, with Kaushik claiming four wickets, Abhilash Shetty three, and Prasidh Krishna two.
Punjab, with 12 points from five matches (one win and four draws) in Elite Group C, currently sits fifth in the standings with 11 points.
