Wed Jan 22 22:59:45 UTC 2025: ## Train Collision in Jalgaon Kills at Least 12, Injures Dozens

**Jalgaon, Maharashtra (India) –** A devastating train accident in Jalgaon, Maharashtra, has claimed the lives of at least 12 people and injured over 40 others. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening around 4:42 PM near Pachora station, between the villages of Maheji and Pardhade.

Initial reports suggest the tragedy unfolded when a false alarm of fire broke out on the Puspak Express (12533), traveling from Lucknow to Mumbai. Passengers panicked, resulting in some pulling the emergency chain, causing the train to halt. Several passengers then jumped onto the tracks. A second train, the Karnataka Express (12627), en route from Bengaluru to New Delhi, traveling on the adjacent track, struck the passengers who were on the tracks. The sharp curve at the accident site reportedly prevented those on the tracks from seeing the approaching train.

The death toll, initially reported as 11, was later revised upwards to 12 by senior police officials. At least seven of the deceased have been identified. The victims include nine men and three women. Among the identified victims, three were from Nepal. The injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals. Videos circulating on social media show the aftermath of the accident, highlighting a shortage of stretchers and the desperate efforts of villagers to transport the bodies.

Jalgaon MP, Smita Wagh, expressed concerns that the death toll may rise further given the critical condition of several injured passengers. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his condolences and stated that government officials, including Minister Girish Mahajan and the Superintendent of Police, are at the scene to assist with relief efforts. Several ambulances have been deployed to transport the injured.

Railway officials confirmed that a spark, possibly due to a “hot axle” or “brake binding” in one of the Puspak Express coaches, may have triggered the initial panic.

While the exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, the incident underscores the dangers of panic and the critical need for better communication and safety protocols during such situations. The railways are conducting an inquiry to determine the precise sequence of events and the responsibility for the spread of the false fire alarm. Helpline numbers have been released by the railways for those seeking information about affected passengers.
