Wed Jan 22 15:19:10 UTC 2025: ## VOC Port Shows Significant Growth in Container Handling

**Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, January 23, 2025** – The V.O. Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tuticorin has reported a significant increase in container handling, reflecting a decade of consistent growth. The port handled 581,557 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) in the current financial year (up to December), a 7% increase compared to the same period last year (543,531 TEUs).

This growth underscores a larger trend: over the past ten years, container handling has risen from 507,735 TEUs in 2013-14 to 747,363 TEUs in 2023-24. The VOC Port achieved the highest ranking in container handling efficiency for both 2022-23 and 2023-24, boasting an impressive 30 container moves per hour, meeting international standards.

To accommodate the expanding container traffic, a new outer harbour, whose foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is under development. This harbour will feature two terminals, each with a 1km quay length and a 16.5-meter draft, capable of handling 4 million TEUs annually.

VOC Port Chairperson Susanta Kumar Purohit expressed confidence in the port’s potential to become a major hub for gateway and transhipment container traffic along India’s east coast.
