**COIMBATORE, January 23, 2025** – Coimbatore South MLA Vanathi Srinivasan visited residents displaced by a Coimbatore Corporation anti-encroachment drive at Rathinapuri HUDCO Colony. The drive, focused on areas along the Sanganur canal, resulted in the displacement of hundreds of people who had built homes along the embankment.
Ms. Srinivasan expressed her support for the affected families, offering condolences to one family whose home collapsed during the construction of a retaining wall. She criticized the Corporation for failing to provide alternative accommodation for the displaced residents, many of whom have lived in the area for decades. According to Ms. Srinivasan, the authorities evicted residents from 19 houses without providing adequate shelter, leaving them to rely on the hospitality of neighbours.
The MLA urged the district administration and the Corporation to address the situation and provide alternative housing for the 137 households served with eviction notices. The displaced residents dispute the government’s claims regarding land ownership and housing allotments. The situation highlights the challenges faced by those affected by anti-encroachment drives and the need for adequate relocation plans.
