Tue Jan 21 16:27:44 UTC 2025: ## Congress Criticizes Government’s Handling of Uniform Civil Code (UCC)
**New Delhi, January 22, 2025** – The Congress party has accused the Modi government of mishandling the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) issue, highlighting the dissolution of the 22nd Law Commission without a submitted report on the matter.
Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), pointed out that the 22nd Law Commission, tasked with examining the UCC, was disbanded on August 31, 2024, despite having previously indicated its intention to review the code. Ramesh cited a paragraph from the commission’s consultation paper which argued against a UCC at this stage, emphasizing the importance of celebrating India’s cultural diversity.
While a 23rd Law Commission has been announced, its composition remains undisclosed, prompting Ramesh to question the government’s handling of such a “respected body” on a sensitive issue. His criticism follows Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami’s announcement that the state has approved UCC rules for imminent implementation. The Congress contends that the government’s actions demonstrate a cavalier approach to the significant legal and social implications of the UCC.
