**Mumbai, India** – Bollywood actor Saif Ali Khan is recovering at home after a terrifying home invasion and stabbing on Wednesday night. Khan, 54, was attacked by an intruder, identified as Bangladesh national Shariful Islam Shehzad, who allegedly broke into Khan’s Bandra residence with the intent to rob him.
Khan sustained six stab wounds during a struggle with the intruder, one narrowly missing his spinal cord. He underwent surgery to address a spinal fluid leak and also received plastic surgery for facial and arm injuries. Doctors have advised him to rest for a week and avoid visitors.
The intruder, Shehzad, gained entry by scaling the building’s wall, bypassing sleeping security guards, and using the back staircase and an air conditioning duct to access Khan’s apartment. He reportedly removed his shoes and switched off his phone to avoid detection.
According to police, Shehzad was discovered by a nanny, Eliyama Philip, who was awakened by noises. She confronted the intruder, who threatened her and demanded one crore rupees (approximately $1.2 million USD). When Khan and his wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, intervened, Shehzad attacked Khan with a wooden stick and a blade.
Following the attack, Shehzad escaped through the air conditioning duct. Mumbai Police launched a massive manhunt, utilizing CCTV footage and local intelligence to track him down. Shehzad was eventually apprehended in Thane, attempting to flee to Bangladesh via Howrah, West Bengal. Police are now investigating his attempts to secure travel arrangements.
Shehzad’s face covering was recovered from the scene and is undergoing forensic analysis. Police are questioning travel agents Shehzad contacted and have recreated the crime scene at Khan’s home. The investigation is ongoing.
